You can "lose all your troubles, down by the riverside . . ."
A river anchors a landscape, a river creates a landscape.
In its contesting with the earth, in its insistent sinuous cooperation with the earth, landscape is formed.
Creek, stream, river . . . they carry the gift of the sky with the dream of the ocean.
On the left bank it is called the Rio Grande, on the right bank it is the Rio Bravo. Like Old Man River we feel it "must know somethin', but don't say nothin', it just keeps rollin' along." And yeah, there's a lot of sweating & straining along that river since it is a border between two cultures who have resolutely refused to see how essentially similar they are for a couple of hundred years. A defeated Confederate general drops his stars & bars banner into the current as he escapes to Mexico. Today bodies of the desperate float away.
My mother was born on the left bank of this river, and in the last clips of this video when I was shooting knee deep in the flow, you could say I was among my sisters' ashes which we scattered into the current upstream.
