Coast Live Oak
Work Zone
An acorn nests into the ground. It might be a wind-blasted place with thin soil, it might be a flat spot in a grove of competitors, maybe sunny & dry, maybe shaded & damp. The little taproot heads down searching, the first leaves venture into the nourishing sunlight. On the terrestrial fringes of California’s Pacific Ocean this coast live oak, quercus agrifolia, begins & ends its life, adapting year after year to the spot where that acorn fell.
