Why do Muslims go to the Mosque on Friday, Jews to synagogue on Saturday, Christians to church on Sunday? Politics maybe. By being seen going out on a certain day people are declaring their identity. They may also be dressed in a unique way.
The side effect of declaring identity is creating otherness, and it reflects a structure of leadership and followship. The potential for conflict is created.
This is especially evident in sports. Fans dress in colors and bear totemic emblems, usually of strong aggressive creatures, hawks, bulls. There the conflict is ritualized on the playing field. Thus we surrender our individuality to become cells in an organism.
